September is definitely a slow month in Key West! The streets are pretty empty, it's easy to get a table in a restaurant (if they are open) and even the movie theater is deserted. We went to the movies this past weekend and it was us and one other guy in the entire theater - maybe you can explain to me why he had to sit right next to us! Or maybe that's a discussion for another day…
Despite the current quiet around town, next month (October) things will start to get wild again! Our "snow bird" church members start to arrive, the church calendar starts to fill up and, of course, Fantasy Fest is right around the corner! I remember my first year here in Key West. Fantasy Fest was quite an eye opener for me (excuse the pun). Sitting on my porch in the evening was beyond anything I could have imagined! But, before the parades and the "Fantasy Fest Zone" started, I remember sitting at my desk on Fantasy Fest Tuesday (Tutu Tuesday), looking out my window and seeing a huge pirate ship drive down the street and lots of people in tutus walking around - and I thought, "I want to be part of that fun!"
Well, last year, we got in on Tutu Tuesday. We put up a tent and tables in front of the church on Eaton Street, invited Dani Hoy to offer live music and served hotdogs, chips and water to folks passing by. Oh, and we wore tutus! It was awesome! We met new friends, had some great theological conversations and laughed a lot! This year, we are going to up the game! Won't you join us?
From 4pm to 7pm on Tuesday, October 21st, join us in front of the sanctuary on Eaton Street for our Tutus and Tiaras event! Wear a tutu and a tiara and come help us hand out some yummy snacks and tiaras while we show our community what it means to be a Loving Church Where All Are Welcome! And to remember that on our darkest days, when we feel inadequate, unloved, and unworthy, we remember whose child we are and we straighten our crowns!
Order your tutus and tiaras now and look for the sign up sheet coming soon to join us for this fun event. We will definitely need help with setup, breakdown, etc., so start clearing your calendar now!
We all could use some fun, laughter and simple neighborly kindness. I hope you will join us!
