Last week I attended a Florida Conference (of the UMC) event in Sanford, FL. It's always great to be with colleagues who I don't see often and learn from people who have much to offer as we consider the future of the church. This conference was called Unfurled: Daring to Chart New Waters. Over three days we went on a journey of allowing our minds to consider new and innovative ways of doing church that will carry us into our next adventure as Christ's Body. I am looking forward to sharing some of the content of this seminar with our leadership team beginning in January.
I mentioned that this conference was held in Sanford, FL. I had never visited this charming town before. It is located on the shores of Lake Monroe and the St. John's River. The downtown area is filled with eclectic shops, restaurants and cafes and the churches are all historic buildings, much like our beloved Old Stone Church here in Key West. I enjoyed everything about visiting this quaint little town, including spending time with my amazing Pastor Posse (Covenant Group) - Beth, Becky and Nicole! I'm including a picture of us just because they are among my favorite people in the world.
We even went on a river cruise for dinner one night. Lot's of fun!
However, one of the things that had the greatest impression on me was the sign outside of First Sanford UMC that is also printed on their Connect Cards which are handed out each week inside the church. A picture of the card may be found above. I invite you to read it. We heard testimony from someone who said that she and her wife hadn't been to church in quite some time, yet they came inside because of this sign and they stayed because the sign was true! And then they became even more involved in the church because this is how the people of this church truly live their lives.
May we also live our lives like this! The way that Jesus taught us!
"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me," (Matthew 25:35)
