A Message From The Pastor
Which one are you feeding?
Recently I was watching the news and was amazed about how awful some of the stories were. Murder, deception, slander, and hate were all over
the 5 o'clock news day. Unfortunately, that was more of the norm than exception. I started to wonder, "What is wrong with our society?
Where are our values, decency and empathy for fellow man?" The more I thought about it the more I realized we are too busy feeding
ourselves the wrong stuff,
There is a well-known legend about two wolves;
|
A Cherokee elder was teaching his children about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to them. "It is a terrible fight
and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment,
inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego." He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity,
humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and
inside every other person, too.
The grandchildren thought about it and after a minute one of them asked, "Which wolf will win?"
The elder simply replied, "The one you feed."
The interesting thing about human nature is that even though we know something is bad for us we continue to eat it or use it. It is
almost like we have a destructive nature where we believe we do not deserve good.
David Myers wrote a book, "American Paradox: Spiritual Hunger in an age of plenty". In it he notes we are paid better, better fed,
better housed, better educated, healthier than ever before with more human rights, faster communication, more convenient transportation
than at anytime in human history. But then he goes on to say that since 1960 the divorce rate has doubled, the teen suicide rate has
tripled, the recorded violent crime rate has quadrupled, the prison population has quintupled, and depression has soared.
We have more stuff than ever before and we are less happy and less mentally well than we have ever been before. Why is that? What
is the problem? Could the problem be what we are feeding our souls?
What have you been feeding your soul lately, the "fast food" of pop culture, violence and hate or the nutritious meal of God's word,
fellowship and service? Be careful what you feed your soul today!
Living in His Grace,
Pastor Ruben
