Music Ministry

For 27 consecutive years, the annual community gift of Handel's Messiah has ushered in the Christmas
season at the Key West United Methodist Church. For the past 13 years, the performance has been produced
and conducted by KWUMC's director of music, Dean Walters. Originally, rehearsals would take place on
four Monday evenings prior to the performance. However, in recent years, due to increasing time
management pressures on participants, the production has become a one-day marathon affair!
Singers from all over the lower and middle Keys show up at 2pm for a three hour rehearsal,
break for dinner, and perform at 8pm! Each year the event draws 60-80 performers, and the
performance level is first rate. Accompanied by organ, piano and timpani, this performance
is Key West's unofficial start to the Christmas season. The performance always takes place
on the first Sunday of Advent, and is free to the public. |

The Chancel Choir at Key West United Methodist Church is considered by most to be the
premiere church choir in Monroe County. Many of its members have performed professionally;
the full, rich sound lends itself to a variety of musical styles - spirituals, gospel, classical, and
some more contemporary selections. The choir's director, Dean Walters, is also on the music
faculty of Florida Keys Community College, and is the director of the "Keys Chorale". The choir's
"Section" leaders sing at the 8:30 service and the full choir at 11:00 AM service. The Choir also
performs for special occasions, including a Christmas Eve cantata, and a special service
for Good Friday. |
